The Republican National Convention was the past week and I guess some of the steam was taken out of the meeting because of our national concern with Hurricane Gustav and our concern for peoples along the gulf coast, especially those in Louisiana. However, the Republicans quickly captured the media spotlight after Gustav turned out to be a lesser impact storm and after John McCain shocked the world by naming an unknown as his running mate. The Road Trip
There are some great roadside attractions in this country, if you take a long car trip. We have taken several 5-6000 mile trips and have seen many wonders of America such as the Great Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. It is a large auditorium completely covered in corn. And you wondered what those people in South Dakota do for fun. Continue reading
The Fear Factor
Well, I have certainly enjoyed the Olympic Games the last two weeks, and like many I have watched a lot more TV than normal. The USA has faired very well, and who hasn’t become fascinated with the great Michael Phelps, perhaps the greatest Olympian of all time. Eight gold medals is a feat that may never be surpassed by one single homo sapien. I am not sure if even Flipper could have won more than eight swimming events. Continue reading
The Rest of the Story
I listen to all sorts of radio personalities, from the disgusting debauchery of Howard Stern, to the ultra-fundamentalist Michael Savage of the “Savage Nation.” Both of these help me get my “mad out,” and they are both inspirations for sermonizing. Savage is so right-wing he makes Rush Limbaugh look like a dope-smoking-bleeding-heart-flag-burning-draft-dodging-hippie-dippie-crystal wearing Hilary lover. Continue reading
Sibling Rivalry
Well I am sure that you have heard the breaking political news if you have watched TV at all this last week. Paris has spoken. Paris Hilton, the celebrity thrust into the presidential campaign in an ad by Republican candidate John McCain, issued a rebuttal Tuesday, albeit in a scantily clad, tongue-in-cheek kind of way. Continue reading
Wrestle Mania
This past Tuesday night we watched at my house what are surely two of the stupidest shows to ever hit television. And the sad part is, we know they are stupid and we watched them anyway. No Masterpiece Theater at my house. No CNN, Bravo or the NASA channel. No Hallmark Hall of Fame. Heck, your IQ drops 10 points just by tuning in these shows. Continue reading
Family Values
Well, I saw the latest rendition of Batman at the theater on Thursday night, and I will say that it was a piece of work. I liked it OK, but I am not yet willing to use the word “great” which seems to be casually flung around by most others as the movie’s predominate descriptor. But it was very good albeit very disturbing. Continue reading
Between a Rock and a Hard Place
I am a light sleeper, probably from being on call at the hospital for 27 years. As a result, I don’t remember my dreams very well, or perhaps I don’t have them at all. I am amazed at the vivid detail that some people can recall when telling of their dreams. Continue reading
The Hour of Power
Since I have been on my diet I have learned to do without foods that I use to worship. I was once a first-rate chocoholic, and now nothing. I quit cold turkey. I ate one last Almond Joy and never looked back. And do you know what? I don’t really miss it anymore. Sure I went through D.T.s for about a month. I was so desperate for chocolate that a stale chewy butter finger or a rotten malt ball would have been nirvana. I needed chocolate like Matt Jones needs rehab. I took coffee intravenously because I needed C.R.T. (caffeine replacement therapy). Continue reading

Well, I still get asked the question if we have recovered from the wedding. And the answer is yes, I think we finally have. We still have wedding stuff in piles in places, but hey, some of it came in handy this past week. We had a four or five hour power failure in Maumelle one evening, and man do we have the candles. We lit enough in each room that our house looked liked a 17th century monastery. Continue reading
