Last week Dianna and I were channel surfing and stopped to watch Star Trek Generations, a movie that I have seen about five times, maybe more. Now I know what you are thinking; I was the one channel surfing as it is a documented fact that channel surfing is a genetically transmitted and exclusively male trait, like male patterned baldness or being skilled at taking out the trash. The Happiness Project
In the news this week, Barack Obama gave all his campaign workers a months pay, plus he let them keep the laptops and Blackberries that were assigned to them during the campaign. It seems like a pretty nice perk as both of those electronic items can be high dollar. I guess those items are essential on the modern campaign trail as communication is the key to success. I am sure they were constantly sending emails so everyone would be up on the latest strategy and news.
But I wonder if all those working hard on the campaign trail ever sent around goofy emails to each other like every other computer owner gets? Continue reading
A River Runs Through it
I had the privilege of spending a few days at a very nice cabin on the Little Red River this week with about nine or 10 friends, some old, some new. It was a guy’s trip away, and it was a hoot, I had a great time. The weather was fabulous and the views from the ample deck over looked what is one of the world’s great Blue Ribbon trout streams. The view was spectacular. Fall was in full splendor with its parade of colors, and the picture on the front of the bulletin was taken near the cabin. And I caught fish. Continue reading
Tears in Heaven
We had a good time at the beach this year, but come to think of it we have a good time at the beach every year. I have never had a bad day at the beach. Well, actually I have. We went to Navarre Beach in 1984 and all got really sick with a virus. Continue reading
I am bound for the Promised Land
The presidential election is just days away now, and I for one am tired of all the talk. Let’s do this thing and get it over with. I spent about an hour in the food court at the outlet mall at Foley, AL, on Friday sitting with Dianna’s dad who really didn’t want to shop and that is why we parked there in the food court. The big TV on the wall was tuned to CNN. Now I am interested in politics, I am patriotic, I do care about my country and what happens in this election, especially this election, but after watching Wolf Blitzer for an hour I wanted to shoot myself in the foot. Continue reading
Holy Cow
Well a lot has been going on in the financial world to say the least, and I will also say that I don=t really understand any of it. I do know that gasoline is under three dollars a gallon for the first time in a while, and I do have a sneaking suspicion that somebody somewhere who is already very rich will get filthy stinking rich before this is all over. Continue reading
Blue Laws Blues
As a Baptist growing up in Arkansas, we had a very definite set of rules concerning what you could and couldn’t do on Sunday, because after all we are commanded to keep the Sabbath holy, as it says in the ten commandments which is our text today. Never mind that the Sabbath is really Saturday and we are really not Jews who are bound to the 10 Commandments, none of that seemed to matter. Oh, we need to keep the commandments you say, and I say OK, I’ll see you here next Saturday. Continue reading
The Legend of Sandy Creek
My family accuses me of not being a fan of movies, and that is not true, or at least not totally true. I just don’t like to waste a beautiful Saturday off indoors all afternoon when I could be enjoying the sunshine and outside. It is a question of priorities. I do like to go to movies if one, they are not too long (my A.D.D. rears its ugly head if they are over two hours long); two, if they are not too sad as I get my quota of sad other places, like the hospital, and three, they have to be worth my nine plus bucks to see. Continue reading
Just Start
We have been in the midst of another deluge, this time from a ferocious guy named Ike. We were without power like much of the city all night, so that is the reason for no bulletins this morning. I never print them until the last minute in case I need to change something. Many in our part of the world still have not fully recovered from Gustav, and our prayers are for all those who have come face to face with the wrath of Mother Nature. Continue reading
